South Delta Midwifery

I was born and raised in Canada but left for the UK in 1995 in search of travel and adventure. I worked at a listening therapy centre with children who had various learning and behavioural issues while continuing my education in Psychology. The therapy program involved the mother’s input and sharing her pregnancy and birthing experiences. This is how my initial interest in pregnancy, birth and beyond started.

I began volunteering at the Birth Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland which was run by a director of AIMS (Association for Improvement in Maternity Services). Here I helped the facilitators with the prenatal education and birthing preparation classes and consequently began my education into the world of Midwifery. The first midwifery conference I attended in 1997 was about keeping birth normal and how to achieve that. This inspired me to start my formal training in 1998.

I received a BSc (Honours) Midwifery degree from Bournemouth University, England. The degree was hospital, community and university based. I learned to use “evidence-based practice” while working within the parameters of healthy and normal processes. In the hospital I was an advocate for the women supporting her choices to have the experiences within her control as much as possible. Informed choice, mutual trust and open communication are important factors in the holistic care I aim to provide mothers.

Having worked in a variety of birth setting (hospitals, a birth centre, homes) I believe each setting has its benefits. Even so, I value being able to care for each woman throughout her pregnancy, birth and postpartum stages the most. I have a sensitivity towards people and aim for women and her family to have positive and fulfilling midwifery care.

Three years ago I gave birth to my son in Europe and I decided that I wanted to return home to Canada to raise him. I have been working towards my registration by attaining BC certificates in neonatal resuscitation, fetal health surveillance, CPR and writing exams specific to the BC model of care and general competencies. I look forward to working as a midwife again with Jane in South Delta and Richmond.
